Do you have a friend big enough to tower over buildings? An unlikely friendship begins when Sophie finds herself whisked away to a strange land by the lovable Big Friendly Giant. When he speaks, his words come out all "squiff-squiddly." But no matter - Sophie can translate. In this they find the “gizzardgulpers” and must stop them from eating all the “human beans.” Sophie and the BFG must travel to London to ask the Queen for help. Together they are able to bring peace and pleasant dreams to the whole world, and Sophie finds a friend she can count on.

Giants will be taking over the Duke City from mid October to November 2nd, as Albuquerque Little Theatre presents The BFG (the Big Friendly Giant), directed by Becca Holmes and adapted by David Wood from the children's book by Roald Dahl. After a twenty-four foot "runt" of a giant swipes Sophie, a small orphan girl, from her window one night, an unlikely bond between the two proves that friendship and loyalty knows no boundaries. Amanda Miner plays a lovely and endearing Sophie, while Mark Van Martin brings the bumbling BFG to larger than life proportions. The rest of the ensemble cast does a wonderful job of juggling multiple roles. Sure to delight audiences of all ages, The BFG will be running from October 17th thru November 2nd at Albuquerque Little Theatre and includes Thursday daytime showings for schools and families at 10:30am and 12:00pm.

Albuquerque Little Theatre’s Family Series...

Providing meaningful theatrical experiences for people of all ages.

The tradition of Theatre for Young Audiences began at Albuquerque Little Theatre as early as 1944, when founding director Kathryn Kennedy O’Connor mounted a musical production of The Prince and the Pauper.  Years later, The Albuquerque Children's Theatre (ACT), founded by Bill Hayden in 1962, under the direction of Sue Ann Gunn, found a permanent home at the Little Theatre in January 2002.  The Family Theatre Series coordinated by Kathryn Morales remains dedicated to continuing ACT's original mission of:  “Producing quality theatre by, for and with children.”

Each season, the Family Series presents at least three prominent plays. These plays are drawn from both classic tales and contemporary literature, written by the foremost playwrights who craft Theatre for Youth.  Past productions have included: James and the Giant Peach, The Velveteen Rabbit, There’s a Boy in the Girls’ Bathroom, and Free to Be You and Me.  The artistic agenda aims to offer challenging stories with family-friendly themes, performed by multigenerational companies.  Study guides are provided for parents and teachers to extend and deepen the theatrical experience.

The Family Series productions are enhanced by the variety of educational programs at ALT. Through workshops for children, youth and adults, the power of theatre is used to engage the imagination and to develop the skills of cooperation, creative thinking and self-confidence. Workshops also help develop focus and self control, and include instruction in basic stage movement, vocal projection and enunciation. Our goal is to offer fun and exciting classes that help our students learn the basics, as well as opportunities to expand their theatrical knowledge and experiences as they become involved in community theatre here at ALT. For a detailed description of our current listing of classes please visit our Educational Programs page.

Ultimately, the Family Series celebrates the creative spirit in everyone, young and old alike.  In producing superior quality, affordable theatre for families, we endeavor to create your most memorable theatrical experiences.
