everyday heroes that are just like you and me but do
spectacular things on a regular basis. Once we learn a bit

Tuesdays |

Beginning Acting for Adults
Ages: 18 and up
Tuesdays: 10 – 11:30am
August 5 – September 23
8 weeks $120.00
Instructor: Lou A. Graham A course of
theatre techniques to help you portray a character; learning
and practicing gesture, body language, vocal exercises,
improv and relating to others, transferring yourself into
the world of “make believe.” But although what we present is
“make believe”, it is very important that the actor be as
real as possible. Theatre is the most democratic profession
of all. We use all ages, all colors, sizes and shapes. After
all, we are portraying human beings, and it is the variety
that makes a play interesting. If you never acted before,
don’t let any of the above stop you from trying it out.
You’ll enjoy it.

Creating Plays from Poetry
Ages: 11-14
Tuesdays: 4 – 5pm
August 5 – September 23
8 weeks $80.00
Instructor: Laira Morgan Good poetry
speaks to us, and reminds us of a truth we already know in
our hearts. Poetry is a wonderful source material for drama,
and in this class students will select poems to perform. The
instructor will bring in wide varieties of poetry for the
class to explore together, including the works of Shel
Silverstein, e.e. cummings and more. We will create
characters as the voices of these poems, and discuss where
and why the words are being said. From this launching point,
we will work as a group to write short plays that further
explore the worlds of our poems - discussing play structure
and character development along the way! At the end of the
session, these plays will be ready to cast and direct,
leading to the rehearsal and production of these plays in
Session 2.

FAQ: Frequently asked questions about our Educational Programs…
Will there be a performance?
It depends on the workshop. Skill building workshops like Play Actors do not have performances at the end of the course. Likewise, many of the Junior Actors workshops, since they usually only have eight meetings, are more about process than product, though some of the Junior Actors teachers will invite you attend the final workshop to observe the learning activities and evidence of your child’s progress. By design, Theatre Lab does end in a fully realized production on the main stage of ALT. If a performance will happen, we will list the date and time in the catalog. If your child is interested in gaining stage performing experience, you should watch the audition announcements for our Family Series and Main Stage productions. We do not charge tuition for acting in our plays. However, you should be prepared to commit the large amount of time that these productions require.
Can a parent watch the workshop?
In general, no. It’s best to leave your child with the instructor. We have found that this frees the young person to fully engage in speaking, moving, and creating. Of course, if the instructor invites you to stay (like at a final workshop), then please do. While you wait, you are invited to sit in our comfortable upstairs lobby, or to wander across Central Avenue to Old Town. It’s also a short drive to Downtown shopping.
Can my child participate in a workshop even if he/she is not in the
correct age range?
Perhaps. We leave that up to the expert advice of the instructor. Workshops are designed with the specific needs and abilities of the learners.
You haven’t cashed my check yet. How do I know if I’m registered?
We process your payment, whether it’s check or credit card, after the first meeting of the workshop. If the enrollment is sold out when we receive your registration form, we will call you. Otherwise, assume you are enrolled. We also call you a few days in advance to remind you of the first meeting.
